Nova S 520

Solid Wood Processing — SCM Group

A joinery machine offering versatile thicknessing and planing capabilities with multiple cutterhead options. Designed for precise wood processing with adjustable feed speeds and working heights.

The Nova S 520 is a four-square joinery machine engineered for precision thicknessing and face planing of solid wood stock. It combines a 520mm working width with dual cutterhead technology, enabling operators to select between traditional straight-knife and modern spiral helical configurations depending on surface finish requirements and wood type. The machine accommodates working heights from 3.5mm to 300mm, making it suitable for both thin veneered components and substantial timber sections.

The machine's technical flexibility centers on its interchangeable cutterhead system. The TERSA straight-knife option features four 520 × 30 × 3mm knives mounted on a 120mm diameter block, delivering consistent results for standard production runs. Alternatively, the XYLENT spiral helical cutterhead employs 84 small knives (15 × 15 × 2.5mm) arranged helically, dramatically reducing tearout and surface noise while improving finish quality on difficult grain orientations. Both cutterheads mount on the same 120mm diameter block, allowing rapid tool changes without machine reconfiguration. Powered by an 11 Hp three-phase motor, the machine offers four discrete feed speeds (5, 8, 12, 18 m/min), permitting speed optimization based on wood species, grain structure, and desired surface finish. Maximum stock removal per pass reaches 8mm.

The Nova S 520 targets medium-sized joinery workshops and solid wood processors handling custom orders and mid-volume production. It suits operations processing hardwoods requiring superior surface finish—such as furniture component manufacturers, high-end cabinet makers, and architectural millwork shops—where the spiral cutterhead's tearout resistance justifies the investment. The machine's 520mm width and flexible height range accommodate typical European solid wood specifications while remaining compact enough for space-constrained production facilities.

Applications

hardwood flooring planing

medium workshop

Engineered hardwood flooring producers use the Nova S 520 to plane solid wood veneer layers and component boards to precise thicknesses within the 3.5–300mm range. The spiral helical cutterhead produces the superior surface finish required for visible wear layers, while the 11 Hp motor and adjustable feed rates accommodate the consistent throughput demands of mid-volume flooring manufacturing.

cabinet door and panel processing

medium workshop

Cabinet makers process solid wood door frames and decorative panels through the Nova S 520, using the 520mm width to plane components in a single pass. The adjustable working height (3.5–300mm) accommodates both narrow stiles and wide panel stock. The 8mm maximum stock removal per pass, combined with selectable feed speeds, enables efficient stock preparation without excessive passes or tool wear.

furniture component milling

medium workshop

Furniture manufacturers use the Nova S 520 to plane and thickness solid wood components (table legs, rails, stiles) from rough-sawn timber to finished dimensions. The XYLENT spiral cutterhead minimizes surface defects on figured hardwoods like walnut and cherry, reducing downstream sanding labor. Operators leverage the four feed speeds to balance production rate against finish quality: slower speeds (5–8 m/min) for difficult grain, faster speeds (12–18 m/min) for straight-grained softwoods and poplar.

custom millwork production

small workshop

Small custom millwork shops employ the Nova S 520 for bespoke architectural elements—baseboards, trim, and architectural components—where surface finish quality is non-negotiable. The TERSA straight-knife configuration provides cost-effective processing for consistent timber profiles, while the option to switch to XYLENT spiral knives protects premium wood species from damage during difficult grain regions, supporting small-batch custom orders.
