Balestrini Idea
CNC Machining Centers — SCM Group
Gantry-type 5-axis CNC machining centre with two work benches designed for milling complex wood surfaces. Ideal for chair components and solid wood element processing.
The Balestrini Idea is a gantry-type 5-axis CNC machining centre engineered for high-precision, multi-axis processing of complex wooden components and solid wood elements. Its dual work benches—bars worktable and multifunction worktable—enable continuous production flow with minimal downtime between part changeover, making it suitable for both job-shop and continuous manufacturing environments.
The machine delivers substantial technical capabilities through its working envelope (1700 mm X-axis, 1800–1990 mm Y-axis, 700 mm Z-axis) and rapid linear speeds of 90 m/min on X and Y axes. The 5-axis architecture combines three linear axes with dual rotational axes: B-axis rotation up to ±120° (LI11 head) or 360° continuous (CS33/CS44 heads), and C-axis rotation to ±370°, enabling full 3D contouring, angled drilling, and sculptural surface machining without repositioning. Three interchangeable machining heads (LI11, CS33, CS44) with spindle speeds reaching 24,000 rpm provide flexibility for routing, drilling, and detailed finishing operations. The linear tool store accommodates 6–8 tool positions, optimizing cycle times for multi-operation sequences.
This machine class targets medium to industrial woodworking facilities processing architectural components, seating elements, sculptural millwork, and complex bent-wood assemblies. It is particularly suited for manufacturers requiring precision 5-axis capability without the footprint or capital investment of larger portal systems, and for workshops that prioritize flexibility in tool configuration and work-holding methods.

Applications
production chair components
industrial workshopHigh-volume chair manufacturers leverage the dual worktables for uninterrupted production of bent-wood or contoured seat shells, back rails, and leg blanks. The 90 m/min X-Y feed rates and 360° continuous B-axis (CS33/CS44 heads) reduce cycle time for multi-angle drilling and edge profiling. 6–8 tool positions minimize tool changes, supporting production targets of 1,000–3,000 chairs per month per component station.
architectural millwork custom
medium workshopCustom millwork shops benefit from the machine's 5-axis capability to machine ornamental mouldings, curved trim profiles, and angled decorative elements from solid wood stock. The 24,000 rpm spindle and ±370° C-axis rotation enable fine detail work and sculptural surface machining on components like handrails, newel posts, and custom crown mouldings. The multifunction worktable accommodates irregular blanks while maintaining precision across complex part geometries.
solid wood structural elements
industrial workshopIndustrial manufacturers of solid wood construction elements—glulam connectors, timber frame joinery, and structural brackets—use the Balestrini Idea for precision angled drilling and multi-face machining. The working envelope (1700 × 1800–1990 × 700 mm) handles large beam sections and assemblies; the dual worktables support batch processing of 50–200+ parts per shift. The combination of LI11/CS33/CS44 heads allows single-setup machining of complex joinery (bird's mouths, mortises, angled bolt holes) that traditionally required multiple machines.
furniture component production
medium workshopThe Balestrini Idea excels at producing chair frames, curved seat backs, and sculptural armrest elements that require multi-axis contouring. Its B-axis rotation (±120° with LI11 or 360° continuous with CS33/CS44) allows angled pocket milling and undercut drilling without manual repositioning. The dual worktables enable one operator to load/unload while the machine runs continuous cycles on the opposite bench, typical for medium-volume furniture component shops (500–5,000 pieces/month per component type).
