WEINIG EScan

CNC Machining Centers โ€” Weinig Group

Advanced inspection system for sorting wood components by strength in accordance with EN-14081. Enables certified production of glulam, DUO, TRIO and other strength-related products.

The WEINIG EScan is an automated inline inspection and sorting system that measures the structural properties of individual wooden boards to assign certified strength classes according to EN-14081 standards. Using laser interferometry combined with vibration analysis, the system quantifies the dynamic E-module (MOEdyn, long) and density of each board as it passes on a cross conveyor, enabling real-time classification without material destruction or processing delays.

The system's core technical advantage lies in its dual-measurement approach: laser interferometry captures precise acoustic properties while vibration analysis validates structural integrity across the board length. By calculating both MOEdyn, long and density (ฯ), the EScan can predict bending strength with sufficient accuracy to certify products for strength-graded applications. This non-destructive method eliminates the need for destructive sampling while maintaining traceability for each individual component.

The EScan is designed for industrial woodworking facilities producing engineered wood products where strength certification is contractually mandated. Target applications include glulam manufacturers, DUO/TRIO panel producers, and structural timber operations processing volumes of 50+ cubic meters per shift. The system integrates into existing production lines without requiring major conveyor modifications, making it suitable for retrofit installations in medium to large operations.

Compared to alternative sorting technologies, the EScan provides certified strength classification rather than simple grading, enabling premium positioning in markets where EN-14081 compliance commands price premiums. The non-contact measurement approach eliminates wear on sensing equipment and reduces false rejections caused by surface defects unrelated to structural performance.

Applications

high volume component sorting

industrial workshop

Large-scale operations processing 50+ mยณ/shift of mixed-source timber can segregate material by structural properties inline, directing superior boards toward high-value applications (glulam, engineered beams) and lower-graded material toward lower-stress uses (trim, crating, energy). The non-destructive laser interferometry method enables 100% inspection without slowing line speeds.

glulam beam production

industrial workshop

The EScan sorts incoming timber boards by MOEdyn, long and density before lamination, ensuring each glulam beam meets specified strength classes for structural applications. By pre-sorting to EN-14081 grades, manufacturers eliminate weaker boards from premium grades, reducing waste and enabling certified strength declarations on finished beams for construction and engineering projects.

engineered panel manufacturing

industrial workshop

For DUO and TRIO panel production, the EScan measures individual veneers and core components in-line to assign strength classes before layup. This prevents mixing misclassified material and ensures finished panels meet load-bearing requirements for floor systems, wall panels, and roof elements in mass timber construction.

structural timber certification

industrial workshop

Sawmills and timber traders use the EScan to generate EN-14081 strength certificates for dimension lumber and structural beams, creating documented traceability for each board's dynamic E-module and density. This certification capability opens access to premium markets in engineered construction where buyers require independent strength validation.
