Area XL
CNC Machining Centers โ SCM Group
Industrial CNC machining centre with mobile gantry structure designed for large format CLT panel production. Suitable for wall, ceiling and roof element manufacturing.
The Area XL is an industrial-grade CNC machining center built around a mobile gantry structure, purpose-built for high-volume production of large-format cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels and engineered wood elements. The machine processes elements ranging from 2100 to 16000 mm in length and up to 3600 mm in width, with material thickness capacity from 20 to 400 mm, making it suitable for structural wall, ceiling, and roof panel manufacturing at scale.
The routing unit delivers 63 kW maximum power (S1) at spindle speeds up to 12000 rpm with 200 Nm torque, enabling efficient material removal across hardwoods and engineered timber compositions. The HSK 100 A tool connection supports a 60-tool capacity across 6 independent tool changers, allowing complex multi-operation machining sequencesโincluding grooving, pocket milling, edge profiling, and through-hole drillingโwithout manual tool intervention. Integrated sawblade functionality with diameters from 800 to 1150 mm provides rip-cutting and cross-cutting capabilities directly within the machining workflow.
This machine class targets industrial-scale production facilities and mid-to-large CLT manufacturers operating in the engineered timber sector. It is optimized for continuous production runs of 50+ units per shift, where throughput, precision, and operational consistency directly impact margin. The mobile gantry design facilitates integration into existing production lines and allows flexibility in shop layout without requiring permanent structural modifications.
Compared to smaller 5-axis CNC centers and manual panel-processing lines, the Area XL distinguishes itself through combined routing and sawing capability in a single setup, reducing material handling cycles and secondary operations. Its working envelope and tool capacity are engineered specifically for CLT element geometry rather than adapted from general-purpose woodworking centers.

Applications
clt panel manufacturing
industrial workshopProduction of large-format cross-laminated timber panels for multi-story residential and commercial construction. The Area XL machines grooves for service runs, cuts window and door openings, drills anchor points, and mills edge details on panels up to 16000 mm long in single setups. Typical output: 40โ80 finished panels per 8-hour shift depending on complexity.
industrial panel processing
industrial workshopBatch processing of engineered wood panels (OSB, MDF, plywood) for industrial clients requiring large format blanks with precision-routed features. The 3600 mm width capacity and mobile gantry accommodate full-sheet processing; HSK 100 A tooling supports both standard carbide and specialized coatings for abrasive composite materials.
prefabricated building components
industrial workshopProduction of pre-finished wall and roof elements with integrated services (electrical, plumbing routes), hardware mounting points, and architectural surface details. Multi-operation capability via 60-tool capacity allows groove milling, boring, profiling, and edge-breaking in single machine passes, reducing assembly labor at the construction site.
engineered timber construction elements
industrial workshopManufacturing of glue-laminated beams (glulam), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), and mass timber components requiring precision routing and cutting. The 63 kW spindle and 12000 rpm capability handle both soft and hardwood compositions; integrated sawing eliminates separate processing steps for length-cutting and profile operations.
