Area X

CNC Machining Centers โ€” SCM Group

A 5-axis CNC machining centre with mobile gantry structure designed for the production of X-lam/CLT walls, floors, and curved glulam beams.

The Area X is a 5-axis CNC machining center featuring a mobile gantry structure purpose-built for large-scale timber construction element production. It processes cross-laminated timber (CLT/X-lam) panels, solid wood floors, and curved glulam beams with simultaneous multi-axis capability, enabling complex geometries, undercuts, and compound angles in a single setup.

The machine accommodates workpieces up to 36,000 mm in length and 3,600 mm in width, with material thickness ranging from 20 to 360 mm, making it suitable for full-size wall and floor panels without secondary repositioning. The routing unit delivers 30 kW (S1) at speeds up to 12,000 rpm with 47.7 Nm torque, supported by HSK 80F tool attachment and a 15-piece automatic tool changer for unattended production cycles. A 1,020 mm sawblade diameter enables straight and curved cutting operations on laminated and solid timber in a single pass.

Area X targets industrial-scale timber construction manufacturers and prefabrication plants producing volumetric housing components, engineered timber assemblies, and architectural curved elements. The machine is engineered for production runs of 100+ units monthly where panel consistency, dimensional accuracy, and reduced material waste directly impact profitability. Its gantry design allows rapid material loading/unloading while maintaining precision tolerances critical for tight-fitting CLT and glulam assembly.

Applications

timber construction prefabrication

industrial workshop

Complete machining of prefabricated timber frame kitsโ€”cutting, boring, and routing connection details on posts, beams, and bracing in one passโ€”using the 5-axis simultaneous capability for complex joinery angles. The 36 m working length accommodates full-length structural members, eliminating secondary operations and reducing assembly time at the construction site by 40-60%.

curved glulam beam processing

industrial workshop

With simultaneous 5-axis control, Area X machines curved glulam beams for architectural and structural applications, including complex crown molding, scarf joints, and bearing pockets. The 30 kW spindle and 12,000 rpm capability maintain surface finish on curved grain geometry while the mobile gantry accommodates beams up to 36 meters, enabling seamless production of premium glulam components for commercial timber frame projects.

clt wall panel production

industrial workshop

The Area X cuts, routes, and machines notches, window/door openings, and connection details on CLT wall panels up to 36,000 ร— 3,600 mm in a single operation. The 5-axis capability allows angled bore holes and compound joinery without manual repositioning, reducing cycle time from hours to 30-45 minutes per panel and supporting production volumes of 50-80 panels per shift for mid-rise modular construction projects.

engineered floor element manufacturing

industrial workshop

Area X routes tongue-and-groove profiles, installs mechanical fastening systems, and cuts register marks on engineered wood floor panels (solid or composite) from 500 mm width upward, with thickness control from 20 to 360 mm. The 15-tool changer enables rapid profile changes between flooring types, supporting batch production of 200+ floor elements daily with repeatability tolerances required for large residential and commercial installations.
